What is a building code?

“Building codes are laws that set minimum requirements for how structural systems and other aspects of residential and commercial building should be designed and constructed,” (NIST).

Building codes ensure public safety, health, and welfare. History has taught humans what works in construction and was doesn’t work. Building codes have evolved overtime to improve areas of construction that have failed in the past.
Building codes set minimum requirements in the construction industry and are put into place to protect people within and around structures. New standards are published every 3-6 years. Currently, the City of Fairbanks adopts the International Residential Code version 2018. However, some engineers and inspectors in the Fairbanks North Star Borough adhere to the latest versions.
Fairbanks is unique in that it does not adhere to building code outside of Fairbanks proper. Essentially, you can purchase a home that never had permits for any building or modification to the building and could have been done by a homeowner or non-licensed contractor.
8 Stars Inc. adheres to the latest published IRC in all our projects, ensuring that we are meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements for construction and remodeling. We also pull permits for any construction project within the City of Fairbanks’ boundary area.
